Sumba Harmony · Culture & hospitality

Good hospitality begins with understanding.

Help your guests connect with Sumba, your team share its stories, and your managers understand the people they work with. We bring local cultural knowledge into the everyday life of your hotel.

Why we are here

A bridge between the hotel and the island.

Hospitality is still a relatively new industry on Sumba. Hotels bring together guests, staff and managers from different backgrounds, often with different ways of communicating and different expectations. Knowing how to run a hotel does not always mean knowing the traditions and everyday life of the place around it.

Local team members bring valuable knowledge from their own communities, but may not have had the opportunity to turn that knowledge into stories and answers for guests. Managers arriving from elsewhere may need help understanding the cultural context of their team’s lives. Sumba Harmony exists to build that shared understanding, so a stay feels more connected to Sumba and working together becomes more thoughtful.

Our programmes

Different people. A shared understanding.

01 / For hotel guests

Bring Sumba into the stay.

Meet the people and stories behind the culture.

Give guests a meaningful introduction to the island without leaving your property. These programmes bring local practitioners into the hotel, with time to explain what guests are seeing, hearing or making. Choose a single experience or shape a series for your guests.

Traditional dance

Host a traditional dance performance with an introduction to its context. Guests can appreciate the people, stories and traditions behind the movement, with the programme shaped together with the performers.

Traditional music

Invite local musicians to share their music and introduce the instruments and stories behind it. A performance can become a personal encounter, with space for listening, conversation and questions.

Cultural storytelling evenings

Create an evening of stories and conversation about Sumba’s traditions, communities and everyday life. Guests can ask the questions that arise during their stay and discover the context behind what they have seen.

Ikat workshops at your hotel

Bring the world of Sumbanese textiles to your property through a hands-on ikat workshop. Guests explore the craft with local knowledge at its centre; the activities, materials and space are agreed to suit your group.

02 / For hotel staff

Help your team share Sumba’s stories.

Turn cultural knowledge into confident conversations.

Guests often turn to the people looking after them to understand the island. A team member may know a tradition from home, yet find it difficult to explain its meaning to someone encountering it for the first time. These sessions give local staff and colleagues from elsewhere the context, language and practice to answer with care.

Understand the cultural context

Explore local traditions, ikat and everyday life, drawing on the knowledge already within your team. Make room for differences between communities and for questions staff may not have had the chance to ask.

Tell stories guests can connect with

Practise introducing a tradition, textile or cultural experience in a clear and engaging way. Connect the story to what guests are seeing during their stay, without reducing the culture to a rehearsed script.

Answer questions with care

Work through real guest questions and everyday situations. Learn how to explain respectfully, recognise the limits of your own knowledge and connect a guest with the right person when a question needs more context.

03 / For hotel management

Understand the people behind your team.

Build a working relationship with room for different perspectives.

When managers and staff come from different cultural backgrounds, the same conversation or expectation can be understood in different ways. For managers who are new to Sumba, learning about local traditions and ways of life provides essential context. We help make space for that understanding and for more open conversations at work.

Learn about life beyond the hotel

Explore the place of family, community and traditions in everyday life on Sumba. Understanding this context can help managers ask more thoughtful questions about the experiences and responsibilities of their staff.

Recognise different expectations

Discuss how cultural differences may affect workplace conversations, feedback and mutual expectations. Use situations from your property to explore where misunderstandings arise and how to clarify them respectfully.

Make understanding part of management

Create space to listen to local colleagues and agree clear ways of working together. The aim is shared understanding, recognising each person’s perspective rather than assuming one explanation fits every member of the team.

A few useful answers

Before we begin

Can we combine guest programmes with team learning?

Yes. You can arrange a guest experience, staff learning or management sessions separately, or discuss a combination. We shape each part around the people involved rather than using the same format for every audience.

Can the guest programmes take place at our hotel?

Yes, including ikat workshops. Tell Nensi about your location, available space and group size so the activities, materials, performers or facilitators can be discussed. The practical requirements depend on the programme you choose.

Are staff sessions only for people from outside Sumba?

No. Local staff bring knowledge from their own lives and communities, while colleagues from elsewhere may be learning about Sumba for the first time. Sessions build on that experience and help the whole team explain traditions and respond to guests with care.

Can management sessions address a particular situation?

Yes. You can share the communication challenges or questions you would like to explore with Nensi. The discussion considers local cultural context and the people involved, without assuming every workplace difficulty has a cultural explanation.

How do we agree dates, format and fees?

Contact Nensi with your property’s location, preferred date, group size and programme interests. Availability, scope and fees are agreed together before arrangements are confirmed. An enquiry does not confirm a booking.

Begin a conversation

Who would you like to bring closer to Sumba?

Tell Nensi whether you are planning something for your guests, staff or management team. Share a little about your property and what you hope the programme will help with.
